Larry,
You can good or cheap but you can't have both. I have a used
plastic one for sale. Plastic student models like mine are impervious to
cracking and quite durable.
However, they are NOT considered "good" instruments (although lots of
professional doublers playing in pit orchestras and show bands use them).
They ARE, however, cheap. A new one runs you about $800 (in the mail-order
catalogues). I'm asking $500 for mine, in just as playing good condition
as the new one (NOT aesthetic condition).
As for wood, you can't even touch one for less than $1200 - USED!
New, the sky's the limit.
