I forgot to respond to this bit the first time round.

You'd have to say that one of the most striking passages of Beethoven 4
for the clarinet is the long high solo in the slow movement. (And the
lower one before, of course.) I don't think that there's anything
that's particularly technical fingering-wise in the whole piece, even
the staccato bit in the last movement.

But the slow movement solo is actually easier on the old instrument,
because you have a good high Db, just thumb and speaker key. That Db
also relates very well with the previous C, which is thumb, speaker key
and second finger.

You can use the side keys on the modern clarinet for the Db, of course,
but it's quite tricky to give this fingering that floaty, 'passing-note'
quality that you need.
