Early Clarinets
Some years ago, a British clarinet player, Keith Puddy arrived in Canada
with a collection of old clarinets for demonstration.
He also visited me.

He took out the old instruments, boxwood C, Bb and A and played them.
They sounded thin.

He also had a Basset Horn..
When he played the Basset Horn, it sounded like a modern day clarinet.

I think that may have been the reason that some composers of those days,
liked the Basset Horn,

Later when the clarinets became more developed by Muller and others,
those squeaky clarinets sounded more Basset Horn like.

My theory is that is why the Basset Horns fell out of favor.
