Ben...

Approach the bass as if it were nothing more than a larger version of your
Bb. You will need to take a little more mouthpiece in your mouth.

You will find that the chalumeau register will be easiest. The hardest notes
to attack cleanly will be clarion G, G#, A. They will want to squeak or
overblow if you bite too hard or if your reed is too soft.

Most bass clarinettists use Vandoren Reeds. I use 3 1/2's, some use 4's. The
Grand Concerts are very good if you can find them. Many people use tenor sax
reeds, and you can get good results, but Vandoren's are better.

The biggest problem will be your instrument. If it has lots of leaks, bent
keys, etc., as most school b cls do, you will find it difficult, if not
impossible, to play upper register notes.

If you have this problem, see if you can have a repairman check it out.

Feel free to contact me directly on this. I've played bass for 34 years. 10
professionally.
