There are two issues involved in Lelia's note. One has to
do with her suggestion that there might be some inherent
problem with contemporary basset clarinets because she
senses a color change on the lowest notes. I address that
as best as I can with the statement that there is no known
inherent acoustical flaw with those notes on contemporary
basset clarinets. That does not mean that she did not hear
what she suggests she heard. Only that the problem she
describes may be limited exclusively to the instrument that
was being played.

The second issue deals with a discussion we had on this list
about two years ago when I brought up the fact that a
picture of Stadler's basset clarinet had been found and it
showed a bell several orders of magnitude different from
those that assumed by all contemporary basset clarinet
makers. Stadler's bell was shaped like that of an English
horn whereas contemporary basset horns have bells like
traditional clarinets. And if any acoustical problem does
exist (as Lelia hypothesizes) this might account for it,
though I state again that I have no knowledge that her
observation is pervasive.
