Berlin Philharmonic(more)

The first conductor Han Von Bulow invited many conductors to come and
conduct the orchestra, people like Mahler, Richard Strauss and
Tschaikovsky who remarked that he found the orchestra's playing very
elastic.
Nikisch invited many famous artists, such as Busoni, Heifetz, Busch and
Casals. He made the first recordings with the orchestra. I remember
hearing a Hungarian Rhapsody. It was very very slow. When the faster
2/4 time came along, as slow as it would sound now,
in contrast to the recording's beginning, it sounded fast.
Claudio Abbado followed Karajan and it was he who brought in many young
players into the orchestra and widened their repertoire.

I recently saw a film with Abbado conducting the music of Peter and Wolf
by Prokoffief. It wasn't the Berlin, but it was extremely humorous.
At the beginning they had people with rubber masks, that looked like
Bernstein, Mehta, Ozawa and, I believe Karajan fighting to conduct.
The last piece on this program was Prokofieff's Classical Symphony.
There was a table with all the famous composers seated around, Bach,
Beethoven, Schubert,Mozart. It was hilarious. They all wore rubber
masks.
