Berlin Philharmonic

Founded in 1882 by 50 members of the Bilse'che Kapelle who rebelled
against their director Bilse.

Hans Von Bulow was their first music director, followed by Arthur
Nikisch who set up the orchestra as a champion of the latest symphonic
music.

Wilhelm Furtwangler who followed him in 1923, was known for his mastery
of the German symphonic repertoire.

Leo Borchard and Sergiu Celibidache followed.

In 1955 the musicians voted for Herbert Von Karajan who was there for 40
years.
But even Karajan could not control the orchestra forever.
In a famous incident, the orchestra against his wishes, fired
clarinetist Sabine Meyer.
He knew that the worm had turned and resigned April 1989

The personnel was rejuvenated by an influx of young musicians.
It was their influence that led to the election in June of Simon Rattle
as the orchestra's sixth artistic director to take effect in 2002.
