Subject: Re: [kl] How to ship a bass clarinet?

>Needless to say, and not to be redundant, but I think it's a bad idea
to ship the instrument in its case, whether you protect the case in a
separate box or not. I shipped my bass clarinet by this very same meth-
od, and it came back to me with over $100 of damage, which brings me to =

my next point, concerning...
<

This is a really important issue! =

I think it depends on the case. I used to have a very rigid wooden case
with
a Selmer, and this worked well for shipping with the inside stuffed so th=
e
bits =

couldn't move.

I now have a Bam case, which holds the parts tightly and in foam rubber,
which is much better "buffering" than the average case, and holds things
better than I could pack them separately - BUT it is not so
rigid and, as Neil says, there is a danger of keys bending if something
hits the side. So I ship it inside a larger cardboard box with peanuts =

between the two. It's made a three UPS 2-day service trips this way
(Denver-Boston) and has been fine.

If flying, it is possible to ship the case in checked luggage and pack th=
e
bits separately in your carry-on. But the longest section of my Buffet lo=
w
C is longer than the allowed 22" :-(.

I am seriously planning to make a rigid wooden outer case with wheels,
which will take the bass, sopranos, eefer and stand and can take
anything United or UPS throw at it!

Since I run a scientific instrument company, I'm well aware of the
monstrous treatment that ANY shipper will give to delicate packages.
It is just random whether UPS, Fedex or whoever are better - though =

usually they are surprisingly good. However, our standard is, you =

must be able to pack things so that they survive a 3 foot drop onto =

concrete in any orientation. This is usually - not always - adequate.
