Hey, Claudia!

The technique that I learned from Charles Fail Music in Georgia who shippped
both a straight and a paperclip Leblanc contra to me in California is to (1)
put small wooden shims under all the major linkages to close all the pads and
keep the keys from getting bent. They're about 1/8" think at the thick end
and 3/8" long; (2) as Neil said, wrap each piece in some sort of foam
padding, not necessarily bubble wrap, and put the pieces BACK into the case;
(3) stuff as much bubble wrap as possible in the case and close the case; and
finally (4) use a moving company's oversize dish pack (or two splices in the
the case of the straight contra) and surround the entire clase with styrofoam
peanuts in the dish pack. Virginia Benade also used that technique when she
shipped Art's low C Amati bass clarinet to me last January. However, we
didn't think it was necessary to shim the keys closed.

You might also want to check with Russell Fail directly at
www.charlesfail.com for any updates. I would definitely stay away from
Mailboxes, Etc. I had a terrible experience and it took me a month to
collect damages. For really valuable stuff like antique china I use a local
packer/shipper in Arcadia who has been packing this stuff for art dealers,
museums, etc. for years. In this case, you really get what you pay for.

Cheers!

Don
