I was skeptical about the key's contribution as well until I tried out a
bunch of horns. It is entirely possible that the same instrument with
different keys would sound the same. This was not a scientific study.
However, I DID notice certain characteristics of the tone depending upon the
composition of the keys. I neglected to say in my first post, that I also
had one of the workers at the store (who I happen to play with in an
orchestra) listening to me as well. He noticed many of the same things I
did. It wasn't a blind test, but it is multiple opinions I am talking
about.
