Fuzzy throat Bb

A pupil came to me a few weeks ago complaining of a fuzzy throat Bb.
It reminded me of the time when I met Brian Manton-Myatt in London and
during the conversation this problem came up.

Brian said that many top notch London clarinetists came to the factory
(Boosey and Hawkes) complaining of a fuzzy Bb.

The factory people told them they would fix it.

What they did, he said, was to change the pad over that tone hole.
Over a period of time there develops a ridge in the pad and that would
cause extra fuzziness.

They changed the pad, and voila- a better Bb.

So if there is an extra fuzziness, look for a deep ridge in the pad.
A new pad might help.
