Reply to Don Longacre,

The Kooiman is a very different kind of thumbrest and you should see a
picture to really appreciate how it could work for you.

The Kooiman has a plate that is tapped and mounted over the place of the
current thumbrest, which is removed. The top of this plate is located
24 mm from the top of the second joint. The thumbrest is removeable and
to mount and dismount it one slides it over the mounting plate. That
answers your other question, since the joint goes back into its regular
place in its case as usual.

The height of the thumb rest is very adjustable, upwards as well as
downwards. I think it would solve your problem. It also adjusts from
side to side for a more perfect fit. To be sure you could write the
factory (in Holland) or a supply house (WW&BW sold me mine) for a
picture. If you want the fax number in Holland they could fax you a
drawing. If so please contact me me privately.

The Kooiman comes with two mounting plates, probably to make the single
thumbrest available to two instruments, like a set of Bb and A
clarinets. It also is suitable for oboe. I wish they made a larger one
for soprano sax as well.

This device has made a great difference to me in coping with the weight
of the instrument, the discomfort of the sharp edge of the traditional
rest and the fatigue to muscles and tendons. I find that my fourth and
fifth fingers move more freely and independently with this thumbrest.

As long as I'm in endorsement mode I would also like to put in a word
for the Galper Bb device that unstuffs the break tones. Both of these
inventions have been significant, even revolutionary for me in my
journey towards playing well.

The usual disclaimer: I have no financial or other relationship to
either of these products.
