Subj: [kl] Low C Selmer Paris Bass Clarinet Needs a Good Home
Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2000 22:22:51 -0500

I may be stepping way out of line, and please e-mail me privately if you
think so, but over the holidays Peter Stoll at the University of Toronto
listed his Selmer Model 33 bass clarinet to low C with an opening bid of only
$3,800 and got no takers. I do not know Peter personally, but I'm a member
of that weird clan who believes that certain clarinets deserve a good home;
i.e. I bought Art Benade's low C Amati bass last January from his widow,
Virginia.

According to Peter who purchased the instrument from the Toronto Symphony's
bass clarinetist, David Borque, the D, Db, and C thumb key extensions were
reworked by Steve Fox who also fine-tuned the instrument. The photos I saw
on eBay of the reconfigured thumb keys should be of real interest to the
Selmer Paris designers.

This instrument deserves to be played regulary in a fine symphony or wind
ensemble and I would urge you to contact Peter before he advertises the
instrument in the trade union journals.
