Here's one theory on how Boxing Day got its name:

The spelling represents popular etymology; it actually has nothing to do
with boxes. What really happened is that a bunch of singers and
instrumentalists heard so much of Messiah during Advent that they began to
react to Handel the way all right-thinking people react to The Little
Drummer Boy. And so they hit upon the perfect remedy. They gathered on
the second day of Christmas to sing the Weihnachtsoratorium. Having
enjoyed the occasion immensely, they decided to make the performance on
that day a regular practice, and hence the day eventually came to be known
as

"Bach Sing Day."
