When I read the above something in me shouted Eureka - this must be the
true basis for the tale of the Pied Piper.

Some time back I posted on a strings bulletin board something that I had
noted while reading two books on violin making. These books were printed
some 45 years apart - but - the drawings of the bow fittings and mechanism
were identical mirror images of each other!!!

Now this raises an interesting point - is it possible that when the tale of
the Pied Piper of Hamelin was first set to print, the apprentice reversed
the drawings and thus showed him leading the rats out of town?

As everyone knows, a picture is worth a thousand words - so was it cheaper
to change the text than the artwork - and thus a new legend was born.

Maybe some of our learned contributors may be able to expand further on the
accuracy of folklore.

May the dawn of the next Millenium lead to Peace and Happiness to you all -

edi
