I think I misunderstood one specific of the question and that was
did the Met use basset horns for that TV performance. The answer
is an absolute yes. The low notes, particularly those required
by the second basset horn, were in the range which cannot be
accomplished by a clarinet. Yet I heard them very clearly as being
performed in the correct register. So, therefore, they could not
have used clarinets but used the correct instruments.

I would have been astonished to hear that anyone even thought of
using clarinets for that aria. Besides the fact that it would not
work for clarinets, the met has access to enough good basset hornists
to play the piece as written.
