Sean,

The mechanism you're describing is called an articulated C#/G# mechanism. Yes,
it is in a better position for both tone and tuning. The mechanism can be a big
help in a very few passages. Saxophones have this feature and so do oboes and
English horns. Because it is more complicated, there are more things that can go
wrong. Most clarinet players do not consider it to be vitally important. The
mechanism is an option offered by all of the big makers, and as you would
imagine, comes at an additional cost. One reason to question having this feature
is that it eliminates the long F in the third register, the one that is fingered
thumb and register key, all six fingers plus an open C#/G# key. On an instrument
that has the articulated C#/G#, the right hand ring key cancels out and closes
the C#/G#. I recently played a top line Yamaha with this feature. The clarinet
was quite wonderful, but having a ring key on the bottom hole of the upper joint
(still another mechanism that came as part of the package) would take some
getting use to.
