I've heard Don Byron live and own a few of his cd's.
He's a great innovator in the jazz world and
incorporates many styles in his playing. He's an
awesome klezmer player and can play a little classical
too. He graduated from NEC and was in with the
Berklee crowd at the time which included Branford
Marsailis (sp). Byron was classically trained, but
got turned off by the scene and started playing jazz.
He's very political and outspoken about social issues,
which can get annoying (did some of this in the
concert I saw). He wins the Downbeat poll for clarinet
almost every year now, even crushing the likes of
Eddie "Mr. Same Licks Over and Over" Daniels. He plays
a mean bass clarinet also! His sound is definitely
unique and he has good technique. Buy one of his cds
and see for yourself. Hope this helps.
