While I can't contribute intelligently to most of Dan's points on this topic,
I'd like to put my measly three cents in.

1. For beginning and intermediate students I have had much success with the
Vandoren B-45 stock mouthpiece. With them my students are able to get big,
easy, controlled sounds. (Well, the ones that practice, anyway.) The
mouthpieces seem to be fairly consistant in quality. I've only encountered
one lemon so far.

2. For myself... This is where I can't contribute much. I play on all
Opperman equipment, and anything else I've tried sounds like crap. SO, I've
not experimented around much, therefor limiting what I know about what's out
there. Also, Kal's only making equipment for his students, so please don't
list him as a source. Oh, I can tell you that he uses hard rubber. And that
there is my knowledge of mouthpieces... Oy.
