Out of those most important people of the last (present) millenium, really,
the only question is whether it was Klose, Rose, Lefebvre, Bonade or
Marcellus...okay, so you could maybe throw in Stadler, Muhlfeld and
Baermann, but then we'd have to consider admitting Mozart and Brahms.
Weren't we just going to include clarinetists? Okay, so here's the
challenge - decide who were (are) the ten greatest clarinetists of all
time? Support your answers with written reasons or other relevant
documentation... and HAVE A GOOD TIME coming up with answers!! Happy
millenium to come... no fruitcake or flames please. Audrey

My vote is for Bonade - he influenced much more then one generation of
players and teachers. Orchestras would call him up and say "who is your
best student", and offer a job sight unseen just on the recommendation of
Bonade. His ligature is probably used by more players then any other. I
don't consider Marcellus in the list of Klose, Rose, Lefebvre, Bonade in
terms of the past millenium, but maybe in this century (but then again
there are other greats like Stanley Hasty, etc.).
