an adult student here choose the 'Vintage' and i had the same experience
with intonation problems.

I would find it almost impossible to play his instrument in tune. Which
negates any joy in playing the instrument.

I don't have the experience to know if the pitch problems could be
adjusted to play reasonably well, by Bay or Ridenour quality overhaul.
