This is a valuable contribution to the debate.
The Voxman/Mead article about Eberl
and other early clarinet sonatas appeared
in 'The Clarinet' in July - August 1995
Volume 22/4, pages 28-32.
As Himie himself wrote "the plot thickens".
I shall not attempt to summarise.
It is a good read!

Richard:
Since I have been doing some research in this particular area of clarinet
composition I have some important information for you regarding the Wanhal
Sonatas. So far, that is up until anytime now, it is believed that the
first extant clarinet sonata was written by a Viennese composer by the name
of Anton Eberl (1765-1807). The sonata is entitled Sonata in B-flat, op.
10, No. 2. and it was published in 1800. The piano part is a true piano
part not a figured bass like the Lefevre Sonatas are. There is an article
in The Clarinet magazine entitled "Some Notes on the Early Clarinet Sonatas
and Anton Eberl's Sonata, op 10, No 2" by Himie Voxman and Maurita Murphy
Mead. I think the year of this publication is 1997 but you could easily
find it in the index to the magazine available on this list. You will be
happy to know, this particular article compares the Wanhal sonatas to the
Eberl. If you want any further information on this article or on Eberl
please feel free to contact me at jab01@-----.net and I will be glad to
discuss this matter further with you. Eberl and his clarinet chamber works
are the topic of my dissertation.
