FWIW, Josef Marx in his notes, dated November 1948, for the McGinnis and
Marx edition of the Bb Sonata, describes it as "what seems to be the
earliest clarinet sonata AVAILABLE IN MODERN EDITION" (emphasis is mine, not
Marx's, but he must have been deliberately hedging). He mentions several
other composers going back to the beginning of the 18th century who used the
clarinet in chamber settings, but without listing specific compositions or
their instrumentations.
