Dan,

Well said.

Don't know how I may help, but am willing and able if the task is spelled
out.

Some further top-of-head comments, which are tendered in the spirit of
trying to scope the issues which may need to be confronted.

For instance, if the idea is to focus on the "frequently asked", perhaps
there initially needs to be a simple mechanism for determining what is
"frequently asked" - eg. a brief survey of listee's suggested top five FAQs.

Then, it is probably relevant to ask: "Frequently asked by whom?". For
example, taking your successive narrowing of the question related to
materials of manufacture, I could conceive of various appropriate answers at
each narrowing, dependent upon whether the intended audience is the novice
clarinettist considering a purchase, or a band director interested in issues
of sound consistency, or a technician wrestling with the problems that
emerge during maintenance, etc. etc. Perhaps it is anticipated that all
these audiences will be catered for, as their various numbers are well
represented on the list, but such a broad approach may present problems of
presentation and coverage that need to be considered.

And, if I may borrow from the experience of another internet group in
another field, who "owns" the outputs? I don't mean in the sense of regular
maintenance of the answers for currency, but in the sense of copyright
ownership. The other group I referred to found that its contributions over
a period of years were condensed by a list member into book form with
copious editorial comments and published, without the prior approval of
contributors, although this was denied by the "author". It may be that we
don't care, as it's all public-domain stuff in the first place, but perhaps
the issue needs to be considered for a half-a-second.

Subject: [kl] A faq for klarinet

The other day, a brave soul came up with a really very good idea, but
then he got dumped on. He said, "Why don't we have a FAQ for the
various topics that appear on KLARINET from time to time so that we
can direct newcomers to that document." Great idea, but then came
back the answers: "You want it. You do it." or "S'not my job man."

It shows clearly how no good deed ever goes unpunished.

All right, so I'll make a counter offer.
