Lowering the pad flattens the pitch. Too much lowering will cause a
muffled, though. Often, correcting a pitch in one register makes its
twelfth impossibly out of tune. Be ready to compromise.
I once temporarilly over flattened my A's right hand chalumeau to play the
Cat in Peter and the Wolf. Of course, my right hand clarinet register was a
bit flat. But, it was nice to play that nice kitty theme right on pitch.
