Hello,
I am in search of playing a solo piece (college level)
that is modern. I'm going to be playing it for a
recital (I have *plenty* of time to prepare it) and I
don't want to play any Mozart or Bhrams or all of the
above that people already have heard and expect. I
want to play something that will keep them on the edge
of their seats. This is for entertainment purpose for
the most part.
Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
I heard about a solo by Jane/Joan? Tower/s ? Something
like that, but have not been able to find it to see if
it is good or not.
Thanks,

The Irish Gal in Hampsha

My dear, probably redhaired gal

If what you are looking for, should be mainly for entertainment, and also be
somehow unexpected, and at the same time keep judges and experts on the edge
of their seats, I might advice you "Run" for B-flat clarinet and piano by
Gerard Beljon. It is a work that you really will enjoy, I think, in
studying. It is not an easy one, but even I managed to prepare it for a very
local contest, where I played (world premiere) it with Gerard listening -
and disapproving, as my interpretation was quite different from what he had
imagined. (Of course I am too nervous to play in front of an audience,
despite all good tips as to stage fright on this list - nonetheless probably
next year one of the bands I am playing with will schedule <<"The Rabbi
laughs" for clarinet and "Art and Joy">>, a concerto I wrote for me myselves
and the local band, based on klezmer melodies).

If you are interested in the Beljon piece: Gerard never took the trouble to
have it published by any music publisher, but it is obtainable nonetheless
from nearly every vendor of sheet music in the Netherlands. You can order it
from his private adress:

Gerard Beljon
Herenweg 80
Nl - 2101 MP Heenstede
The Netherlands

When I bought it some four years ago, it cost only about seven (7) US$, and
the price included a cassette, both the piano part play-along, and the piano
and clarinet parts played on synthesizer. From the level you indicated I
think you will be able to prepare it sufficiently for any jury to be
satisfied.

To be specific: I have no financial or other interest in this mailing, I
just want to help you to find some work sufficiently new , interesting and
refreshing.

BTW In David S Naden's mail to this list he mentioned the Solo de concours
by "Messenger". I think it should be "Messager"

Rien (note the correct spelling)
