Boy there is so much good stuff to choose from. The Joan Tower piece you
are probably thinking of is call "Wings for solo clarinet." It is a very
difficult work. You also might look at:

Samuel Adler Canto for solo clarinet,
Roberto Sierra- Cinco Bocettos for solo clarinet,
Astor Piazzola- 3 Tango Etudes (orig. written for sax, but they work great
on clarinet).
Paul Harvey- 3 Etudes on themes of Gershwin.
Donald Martino- Set for clarinet
William O Smith- Five Pieces
There is a solo piece called "Flames" but I can't remember the composer off
hand.
Dennisov- Sonata
Jean Rivier- Les Trois <<S>> (really fun piece)

This should provide you with a good start. They are all great pieces and
they are all quite hard. Most are standard repertoire, but those that
aren't should be. You shouldn't have problems finding this music at any of
the good music stores around the country.
