Having read commentary from this board for several weeks I'd like to ask =
a few questions of my own. I purchased a "new" Buffet "Crampon" around =
15 years ago - only recently found at the Buffet site that it was =
actually manufactured nearer 40 years ago. To my knowledge it's never =
had the wood oiled and at this point has never developed any cracks. I =
moved to Alice Springs, Australia in 1997 which has a generally dry, hot =
desert climate. I'm wondering if I ought to consider oiling it now, or =
not. I hadn't oiled it previously for fear of being too messy and =
ruining pads. Could oiling at this point cause any harm?

Also, I'm wondering at the quality of the instrument. I'm aware that =
today Buffet makes several professional models but have heard of the =
"Everett?" and curious as to how the Crampon rates to the others. After =
a year of reading commentary on the Selmer clarinet board I'd convinced =
myself that there were some difficulties with tuning and had intended to =
purchase a new Selmer Paris model this year but now I'm not so sure if =
that's what I want. I talked to a dealer in Sydney who told me I =
wouldn't like the Selmers - that it would take a year to adjust to the =
different instrument - in addition to being much more expensive, even =
compared to a new R 13. =20

I might add that I'd put the Buffet away for 10 - 15 years without =
playing until I moved to Australia - from near Chicago and it's been an =
uphill battle to regain my technique and tone - using a Selmer C 85 =
mouthpiece for the last year as was recommended by a pro from the Selmer =
board. Alice Springs is far from the major cities with no music stores =
that carry decent musical instruments so it's impossible for me to try =
out various models and brands of new clarinets. After moving here to =
join my wife who I met on the Internet I found that being in my 50's =
could get no full time work and ended up giving private music music at =
a local school, and joined a couple local musical groups so I'm happily =
reinvolved in music.=20
