David,
I assume you directed your student to this guy because he was known to have
requisite skills and a reputation for good work.
It's no doubt frustrating to you if you consider you have the knowledge and
a sound basis for directing the student, but a secondary individual
over-rides you.
On the basis of your first example, I would have suggested that perhaps you
could allow for the slim possibility that the other guy might know something
you don't, and maybe a low-key phone call to him could confirm or deny that
proposition.
However, on the basis of your subsequent examples, I'd tend to accept Karl's
advice - walk away, and recommend someone else in future.
Michael

Two other classics from this repair guy.
The student just ordered a couple of barrels. One was a DEG, other was a
Scott (I didn't want to spend their money on a $100+ barrel). Both were
made of a synthetic material which the repair guy said "it's a woodwind,
you must play with a wooden barrel". Lastly the student plays a Hite D
facing Mouthpiece (professional). This guy says "do you like that thing?"
I really don't feel like confronting him, as there is an old saying -
"never get into a fight with a skunk - even if you win, you'll come out of
it smelling pretty badly."
