Personally, I believe that every player of every instrument must get to
know the workings of their horn, if not well enough to fix them, at least
well enough to recognize that a problem exists. We see people bring
instruments into the store all the time saying, "I don't know what is
wrong" when there are keys literally falling off! Of course, some people
are just mechanically challenged. I recommend really studying your
clarinet. Look at it, move the keys, see what each one does, how they move
together and affect each other. Disasembling and reassembling will teach
you a lot, but you might want a repair manual to go by, unless you are
particularly mechanically inclined. Any cheap set of jeweler's
screwdrivers will do for most purposes. I've seen them for as little as
$1.00. And be sure you have a good relationship established with a patient
local repair tech to correct what you foul up!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
