Mood Indigo: written by Ellington/Bigard; my recording (Duke Ellington Live
at The Blue Note, recorded 9 August 1959) has Russell Procope soloing on
clarinet, Shorty Baker on trumpet and Ellington himself on piano.
Sophisticated Lady: Ellington/Parish; all hail Harry Carney. His baritone
sax playing is outstanding - I believe the tune was written for him, and he
certainly does it justice.
Personnel on these two tunes is: Clark Terry, Ray Nance, Willie Cook, Cat
Anderson & Shorty Baker on trumpet; Quentin Jackson, Britt Woodman & John
Sanders on trombone; Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope, Jimmy Hamilton, Paul
Gonsalves & Harry Carney on reeds; Duke Ellington on piano; Jimmy Woode on
bass; Sam Woodyard on drums. It's an EMI recording, number 7243 8 28637 2
4. I'd highly recommend it - the quality is surprisingly good and there
isn't one track that's not worth hearing.

The Glenn Miller tune I don't have an original recording of - the one I do
have is from much later, when the band was under the direction of Buddy De
Franco. So all I can tell you is that it's written by Gray- De Lange and is
published by New World Music Ltd. I do also have a Glenn Miller recording
of Sophisticated Lady; it's a full band version, rather than a baritone
solo. It's not bad, but I prefer the Ellington/Carney version!

By the way, does anyone know who played baritone sax on the George Benson
tune "The Cooker"? I've got it on CD, but the bari player is anonymous.
He/she does a fantastic job, and I'd like to know who it is!

Anna
