Yes, one and the same. He did a great job last night, in my opinion. I
had never before heard him play anthing but more-or-less straight-ahead
jazz. I thought his improvised sections in the Rhapsody were very
interesting. True, this was not another "cookie-cutter" performance.
The clarinetist did a great job on the glissando. However, before getting
to that, he also improvised for a minute or so on some Gershwin themes.
I didn't object to it, but I also didn't think it particularly added
anything to the performance.
I played the Rhapsody a couple of times with Lorin Hollander as piano
soloist. He took a few liberties with the printed part. In particular,
in cadenza-like sections, he would swing the 8th notes in jazz style, as
opposed to playing them straight, as written. I thought that was very
effective.
