I've received a number of messages asking what I'm doing to protect my
computer from the predicted onslaught of Y2K computer viruses and worms.

As I've mentioned before, I use anti-virus software on my home toys and get
CERT advisories for my Unix boxes. But - right now - I'm updating my PC
anti-virus software daily and scanning all my files every evening. It
doesn't cost me anything extra (except for the electricity to keep my
computers on overnight).

If you don't have anti-virus software on your computer, this is the time to
download those "30 day trial" copies and run them. They'll be "nagware" for
30 days, but it's well worth it. I use Symantec (www.symantec.com) for my
PCs, but any of the major vendors' software will be just fine. Use the free
update service often. Then, after the 30 days, make your decision.

For those of you with Macs - keep an eye out for news of Mac viruses. The
Mac hasn't attracted as many hackers, but it's just as vulnerable. There's a
few shareware packages out there that'll fix the major Mac viruses
(SevenDust, etc.).
