Denise,

I have terribly bad TM joint disease. I have been through four
courses of braces and numerous surgeries, including having my jaw surgically
broken and repositioned. I will wear retainers for the rest of my life, if
I wish to conserve what is left of my natural jaw composition. This
includes wearing appliances while I play.

If you have the determination and discipline you can learn to play
very well with your given circumstances. I do have a separate set of
retainers that I use for playing, which contain no metal and are almost
undetectable. They do not interfere with my playing in any way and, in
fact, make playing more comfortable, as the appliance covers my lower teeth
and protects my lower lip. In the past I have recommended its use to people
who have discomfort in the lower lip.

The only problem I encountered with the braces was the routine
adjustment that was required. I did request that my orthodontist let me
accommodate each adjustment before the next one was made. Sometimes that
meant waiting as long as six weeks between adjustments and the orthodontist
was bound by my convenience instead of his. Other than that I had no other
problems.

While I am not a professional musician, I do have a reasonably full
schedule of engagements. I did not have to cancel any because of the
braces. You really should be able to look forward to an enjoyable playing
and practicing schedule. I hope this helps to lighten your load.

Nancy
