When my high school started a jazz band many years ago, we had only two
saxophone players even in the concert band, and both were altos. Since, at
that time, I was a rank beginner on CLARINET, it was not reasonable to
switch me, so the only practical solution was to have me play the tenor
parts on clarinet. It may not have been perfect, but since I had already
been a jazz fan for years and had the feel for it, it worked out. Playing
trumpet partrs works, too, and might also be a good place to stash an EXTRA
sax player (on soprano) if you are short of trumpets. I did that once in a
pit band. The mute effects didn't come off, but other than that...

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
