OK, I'll bite. It's another day after all.

(Actually, I think one of the minor satisfactions of this list is to get
such marginally off-topic things sorted out in a community not
professionally dedicated to the topic, but which contains experts of all
sorts.

That's also true of clarinet-related topics, of course.)

So, why isn't it equal to the negative log (base ten) of the hydrogen
ion concentration? Which is what I was taught, I think, and which the
calculations always assumed?
