Dear Bill, maybe I have some information for you.
You said that "the larger the reed, the shorter the life". Maybe yes, but it
is not because it is larger, but because it is thicker then the small reed.
See, the stronger part of the cane is the part closer to the bark. So, the
Eb reed is thin; the bass thik.
