For that reason you have to clean up your reeds once a week.
Dear Diane, I recently finish my Master dissertation and one of the things
related to the reed that I made a research was saliva x water.
In my conclusions, saliva is made by 96% of water. The acids of the saliva
can not cause any demage to the reed(you could EAT a reed and nothing would
happens with it (argh)(!!!)(???)).
So, if saliva is made by almost 100% of water, you can say that saliva is
almost the same of water.
The big diference betwen water and saliva is their specific gravity: salivas
level is lower then water. Because that the reed become soked in water
faster then in saliva.
To clean the reed I use hydrogen peroxide: works very, very well!!!

All the best

Fernando
