Thanks for helping sort things out. Just to clarify -- this information
about recent clarinets probably doesn't apply to "vintage" ones. Holton was
founded in 1898. Holton catalogues from the early 1930s say that the
clarinets at that time were made "by one of the world's leading
manufacturers" (unspecified). Not sure how long Yamaha has been around, but
I think conventional wisdom is that those early 20th century Holtons came
from France. According to the catalogues, Holton manufactured its own brass
instruments in Elkhorn, Wis. back then.
