Try this is you still want to use V12's. (Excerpt for my booklet "Making=20
Clarinet Reeds by Hand" copyright 1999 Clarinetxpress)

To narrow your reed, place a sheet of 320 sandpaper on the glass plate. Hold=
=20
your reed between your thumb and forefinger right at the shoulder, with the=20
tip facing away from you. Place an edge of the reed on the sandpaper and dra=
w=20
it back across the sandpaper. Hold the sandpaper flat, you do not want to=20
taper the tip inwards! Turn the reed over and sand the other side. Never san=
d=20
toward the tip, it will tear easily. Keep the pressure even and make sure al=
l=20
points of the edge contact the sandpaper. See Figure 10.

Check the measurements frequently. To narrow the butt proportionally more=20
than the tip, hold the reed below the shoulder, the extra pressure will take=
=20
off more cane toward the butt of the reed. To take off more from the tip,=20
hold it above the shoulder. Take great care in doing this; you risk beveling=
=20
the butt or the tip. The edges, from tip to the extreme end of the butt,=20
should always be a straight line.=20

Some reedmakers intentionally vary these measurements. If you narrow the tip=
=20
of the reed to less than 13 mm, you can improve response. Be careful though,=
=20
narrowing the reed can reduce resonance. If you leave your reed wider than 1=
3=20
mm, you can create a @-----. This can, however, caus=
e a reduction in=20
response.=20

NOTE: This is the third opportunity you have to match the reed to your=20
mouthpiece facing.=20
