I just looked at a trio for Piano, Clarinet (or Violin), and Cello written
by Beethoven Op. 11 and published by a German company and they had the
instruments listed in that order -- piano first. I don't know if this is
typical or atypical, but I thought I'd throw it in.....

Also -- interestingly enough, we had the NY Chamber Soloists Perform at
Caltech a couple weeks ago and I saved the program. Here are the titles of
the pieces as given in the program (which I assume was written by someone
here at Caltech, though perhaps not one who is aware of all the
technicalities.)

"Quintet for Oboe, Violin, 2 Violas, and Cello K.406/516b (K. 388)" by
Mozart
***In this case, they had an Oboe player playing the 1st Violin part, so it
makes sense the Oboe is listed in the position of the first violin.

"Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Double Bass, Opus 39" by
Sergei Prokofiev
***Winds first, then strings in descending Orchestra score order

"Septet in Eb Major for Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Horn,
and Bassoon, Opus 20" by Beethoven
***Strings first in descending score order, then winds, but the horn is
thrown in between two woodwinds... interesting.

Also -- as I am writing I just got Mark's latest message. I was the band
librarian in high school, and I seem to remember that all the music was kept
in yellow folders that had the instrumentation for Orchestra and Band on it,
in score order. I know that the band one included Electric Guitar, Drum
set, etc.... maybe you could track one of those folders down from a local
group. Incidentally, I seem to remember Electric Guitar and any other
auxilliary instruments coming in between the Tuba (lowest brass) and the
Percussion parts.

Hope this helps a little, though judging from the piece titles on that
program, it seems like there may not be an absolute standard order of
listing.... maybe composers have a little leeway -- I don't know. Seems
like there would be a system though that works for most cases.

Craig
