In the few books I have seen that list instrumentation of pieces, it is
listed as numbers in standard score order.

For Example

2,2,2(+bass),2(+contra) 4,2,2,1,harp,celeste,piano, choir(SATB), strings

would mean 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons,
contra, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 tuba, etc...

When I look at chamber music references, they are generally listed in the
same order. It has been several years since I've had to deal with
librarian/score issues. But, I believe what I wrote is the order.
Keyboards, percussion, piano, and soloists are stuck between winds and
strings in the middle of the score.
