My audiophile red flags are up. Vinyl LPs continue to get an unfair rap.
If you play a record on a very good table, with a good arm and a good
cartridge, it will sound better and more lifelike than a CD. A pro
clarinet played with a poor mouthpiece, a bad soft reed, and a bad player
will NOT sound like a $2,000 clarinet. Does that mean the clarinet is no
good?

I realize that many of you have never heard a really good
table/arm/cartridge setup. Look into tables by Thorens, Sumiko, Music
Hall, NAD and others in the $300-700 range. I have college students here
who have discovered, much to their surprise, that those old records sound
great after all. I use at home a Linn Sondek LP 12 with a Linn basik arm
and a Garrott cartridge.

The cons of records are you need to clean them, turn them every 20 minutes,
they do not fit in the dashboard of your car, and do wear out, IF you do
not clean them, or drop them, or leave them in the sun.

As if caring for clarinet reeds is any easier.

I keep about 3 feet of records in the office and have way too many yards of
them at home. nd me your vinyl after you record on mini disk or what ever.

The Library of Congress has recently invested a pair of YORK turntables
which are hand made in England. The price of them are like a Lexus!
However, they found out that the sound they could produce from their vinyl
collection was increadable. Hmmm..

Happy holidays,

David
