You have a point here, except a bad soundcard won't necessarily sound better
than a minidisc, and you will find compatibility issues with the cheap stand
alone CD burners.... CD players do not like non-disc-at-once CDs.

Also, if you are archiving, you better hope that your minidisc will be
around in 5 years. Seeing the way technology is going, I'd predict that it
won't be around. Minidisc is a higher-tech cassette... It will be replaced
by something better (perhaps MP3 players/recorders).

My recommendations for computer-based CDs is for long term reliability. In
professional circles, 1/2" analog 2-track tape (30ips, no NR) is the most
preferred archival medium. Been around for a long time, will never go out
of style. Tons of recorders exist. However, few "normal" people have these
recorders/players and because of that CD is right now the most easily
accessible long-term digital storage medium.
