Subj: [kl] Bouffil's Opus 4 ready for download
Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 22:49:15 -0500

The Opus 4 Duo for Harp/Piano and Clarinet is ready for downloading and
your playing
pleasure. The University of California, Berkeley Music Library allowed me
to create
this new edition and to make it available on my Web page if I agreed to
send them a=20
free hard copy. All that has been done.

All articulation and dynamics markings are consistent with the earlier
edition except for
the "rF" notation which we discussed here earlier. I made some minor
modifications which=20
are noted in two small .MUS files showing how the earlier edition appeared.

I find the Duo to be a delightful piece with hints of Bouffil's inimitable
ability to make his instruments "talk" to each other, a technique which
showed greater maturity in his=20
Opus 7 and 8 trios. I played along with my sili(con) pianist several times
until I decided
to call in his (her) friend who plays the harp. I think the harp sounds
much better as the
second player, so that's how I've offered the MIDI file. You folks can
change it to suit
your tastes (blown bottle or banjo, anyone??).

I promised that I would indicate on the new edition that the UC Music
Library holds in its
collection the 182? edition of this piece published by Journal d'Euterpe.
That statement=20
is in the preface to the copy I sent to the Music Library. I have also
stated that fact in the=20
line preceding the links on my Web page. So as not to leave anything to
chance, here=20
is the Preface that goes with my new edition:

Jacques Jules BOUFIL (or BOUFFIL) (1783-1868) was a Parisian clarinetist
and composer whose career spanned the reign of Napoleon, the restoration of
the Bourbon dynasty, the Revolution of 1830 and the formation of the Second
Republic. He studied under Lef=E8vre at the Conservatoire de Musique and for
a number of years performed with a celebrated wind quintet whose members
included Louis Dauprat, Joseph Guillou, Antoine Henry and Gustave Vogt. =

=93Duo pour Harpe ou Pianoforte et Clarinette=94, Opus 4 was first published=
by
Journal d=92Euterpe during the period when Boufil played in the orchestra of
the Op@-----. That
edition is in the collection of the Music Library of the University of
California at Berkeley. I have assigned this new edition to the public
domain so that it may be copied without restriction. At this writing, the
score is freely available for downloading (in Finale 3.7 format) at the Web
site=20

The original notation in the parts for clarinet and harp (or piano) are
shown below where this new edition differs from that of the Journal
d@-----. (in the copy I gave to
the Music Libray I cut and pasted below the two short .MUS files showing
the original=20
notation in the measures I changed -- O.S.)
