As a parent who has been in the same position (and at the time had never, ever played a clarinet), it really helps to get a teacher involved in the process.

I'm remembering when my oldest son's teacher came to me and suggested that we upgrade his Vito 7414 to a better instrument; we hadn't even finished the "rent to own" plan on the 7414 yet. He sat down and demonstrated to me the differences between the Vito & his Buffet R13. I went through the catalogs at the music store & checked prices - and went into sticker shock.

His teacher & I discussed it the following lesson, where I told him there was no way I was going to spend 3 grand on a clarinet! He calmed me down (:^) and told me that he and his friend (the late Aldo Moro) would be going to pick up a number of good clarinets down in Indiana, and that the Selmers were the best buy that year (1994).

The price of $1200 for a new 10G sounded a lot better that $3000, so I told him to go for it.

Little did I know how much it was _really_ going to cost in the long run, as I now have to put at least one kid through music school :^)

I'm playing the 10G now. It's been a worthwhile investment.

Cheers,
Mark C.
