Just a thought.
I play both sax and clarinet and just went through the process of buying a
new alto mouthpiece. I have a number of vintage alto mouthpieces including a
completely mint Henri Chedeville alto sax mouthpiece (it is quite nice, but
not awesome).
After trying a significant number of new mouthpieces I ended up with a
plastic alto mouthpiece hand faced by one of the sponsors of this list
(their better mouthpiece was severely back ordered). It was clearly better
than any of the big name new or vintage mouthpieces I own, including the
chedeville(for you sax fans I also own a RIA, dukoff, some vintage
brilharts, a berg and some others).
I think a very good start would be to try the mouthpieces you are
considering.
But I would definitely try the mouthpieces from
Roger Garrett, Clark Fobes, David Hite or Tom Ridenour
All are avilable on a trial basis from the Woodwind and the Brasswind , and
I believe
Muncy Winds carries them as well. I would be surprised if one of these did
not play better for you than any of the vintage mouthpieces
I know there are some others that should be included and I apologize to
them, this was not intended to be an exhaustive list. The small specialty
manufacturers seem to make a much better product at the same or lower price
than the big guys (I would consider Hites and Fobes student mouthpieces
better than any of the VanDorens I have tried, B45, B45 Lyre, 5rv, 5rv lyre,
M13 and a number of others.
