I think it's ford Vs. Chevy. The Chedville thing seems to have been an east
coast thing and the kaspar a Midwest thing. When I was growing up I was lucky
enough to study with Iggy Gennusa, He played a Ched from the day he was
weaned. He had 3 or so he learned to reface them. I don't know how many he
had over the years. Finally a few years after I'd been in the army for a
while, he let me try this holy relic of a mouthpiece, It was nice but I still
sounded the same. I thought that 2 of the Gennusa "Electro computer curved"
mouthpiece that I picked out 3 yrs earlier played much better. So what he
thought was the mouthpiece to be copied, I thought was pretty good. Now you
have people spending $600+ thinking they will sound like Marcellus if they
only have a kasper. My experience is you'll go through a lot before you find
one better than the mouthpieces made by a the contributors to list. All of
them are willing to talk to you if you call them. Here's the really best
part. If you find one you really like, you'll be able to get one that plays
almost like it.
Here's an interesting thought, The photo Gennusa uses in his ad in the
Clarinet magazine, was one of my first professional photography gigs back in
1981. Hard to believe that's almost 20 yrs ago.
