"Performance" royalties (paid when performing copyrighted works) and
"mechanical reproduction" royalties (paid when making an LP, tape or CD
recording) are two areas that are separate from "printed matter" copyright
and separate from each other as well.

I know far less about these than I do about printed matter copyrights, but
the best source of information to answer your "mechanical reproduction"
question is the Sam Fox Agency. They are the agency that handles all
mechanical reproduction royalties in the USA. They have a web page, whose
URL I unfortunately don't have handy, but any good search engine should
find it for you.
