Someone said that one shoul blow harder, other ones that one should blow =
much
less than
in the lower register. All of them supported their ideas with =
"scientific"
motivations.
=20

Frankly I think that both statements oversimplify what is required when =
trying to get good tonal quality in the Altissimo range.

I have learned that there are two things I must do to play is this =
register.
1. Use more support from the diaphragm. =20
2. Raise my tongue slighty (Voicing) to increase the speed of the air =
stream across the reed.

If I fail to use either one of these than I am reduced to biting down =
which causes a "pinched sound".

If you think in terms of a water hose with a variable knossel it my be =
easier to understand. Without the nossel the water flows out of the =
hose slowly. With the nossle, you can close the opening down, which =
will cause the water to flow much more quickly. However, you have also =
increased the pressure in the hose. In order words, one effects the =
other. =20

If you blow softly, than you must raise the tongue more to increase the =
speed of the air across the read. If you "Blow Hard" (hopefully with =
support) than you can lower the tongue slightly lower the tongue to =
decrease the speed of the Air.

All of this is IMHO. I hope I haven't confused anyone or stated =
anything incorrectly. If I have; please be gentle.

Sorry if this is not very scientific. I barely passed Science in High =
School because I spent to much time practicing.

P. S. I can't seem to spell the word nossle correctly, according to my =
spelling checker. So for clarification, it's the thing you put on the =
end of a hose.
